Sexuality Bisexual Occupation (Former)Champion of Kirkwall PB Joe Manganiello
Garrett Hawke, purple Force & Elementalist Mage.
Hawke, after the destruction of Lothering by the Darkspawn, boarded a ship to Kirkwall with his mother and brother, and Aveline Vallen, only to find the city was filled with other refugees from the Blight and the city guard was turning people away. Worse, they discovered that Gamlen, Leandra’s brother, had gambled away the Amell estate and fortune. The only way for them to enter the city was to bribe Athenrel, an elf smuggler, to get them in but only if Carver and Hawke agree to be indentured servants for a year. Once again, Hawke had no choice and accepted the contract.
A year later, Hawke managed to work off the debt but he still lacked the funds to care for the entire family and avoid being captured by the Templars. At this time he met Varric, a dwarf and member of the Merchants Guild, who convinced him to join as a partner in his and his brother’s expedition in to the Deep Roads. There they hoped to find enough treasure to make everyone rich. All it took was 50 gold. Once the money was gathered the group descended in to the Deep Roads where things turned for the worse. Bartrand, Varric’s brother, betrayed them and left them to die underground. Hawke with Varric, Carver, and a former Gray Warden named Anders, found their way out at the cost of Carver contracting the Blight. Hawke was forced to give his brother to a group of Gray Wardens in the hope it would save his life. The only bright side was that Hawke found enough treasure to make his family rich beyond measure.
Three years later, the Hawke family was once again living in Hightown among the nobles. He was a well respected citizen to the point that he was asked to investigate a series of missing women in Kirkwall. Hawke’s mother, Leandra, was abducted by the white-lily serial killer who was also responsible for the other missing women. He followed the man’s trail but was too late to save his mother who had been murdered and pieced together with parts of the other women at the hands of a blood mage named Quentin. His mother’s last words were how proud she was of her son.
The only bright light Hawke had at this time was Anders. The two had fallen in love over the years of their friendship and he found the other mage’s presence an incredible comfort when coping with the loss of his mother. His other friends warned him of the dangers of taking up with the rebel mage possessed by a spirit of Justice but he did not listen. He loved wild and recklessly, clinging hard to the one good thing he had.
While Garrett hunted the serial-killer, tensions in Kirkwall came to a head between the Qunari who had occupied the city for several years and a group of citizens who hated their heathen ways and influence. Garrett is asked to intervene with Qunari affairs as he had done several times in the past. This time, he accompanied his friend Aveline, now captain of the city guard, to arrest some criminal elves who fled to the Qunari compound to hide. The Arishok refused to hand them over and had enough of the city and marshaled his forces to conquer the city. Hawke was able to rally the Templars and Circle mages to fight back. He was forced to face the Arishok in one on one combat and somehow emerged victorious. He was named the Campion of Kirkwall for his heroic efforts.
Peace never came to the city after that. With the Viscount dead, Knight-Commander Meredith, leader of the Templars, took stewardship of the city at the request of the Chantry but after three years still had not allowed an election for a new Viscount. The mages in the city became restless under her tight control and the insurrections of the Mage Underground were more frequent. For some reason, the citizens of Kirkwall looked to their Champion to keep the peace between the Mages and Templars. He failed. Spectacularly.
Unknown to Hawke, Anders had planned an act which would force the city’s hand. He blew up the Chantry, destroying all chances of a peaceful compromise between the two factions. Hawke was betrayed by his love and given no time to mourn as Meredith called immediately for the Right of Annulment which meant open slaughter of all the city’s mages. He could not allow that. He chose to stand with First Enchanter Orsino to protect the mages. Anders asked for death but even after his betrayal Hawke could not. He ordered his former lover to leave the city and never return. Hawke’s final battle came at the Gallows where he was betrayed again by Orisno who turned to blood magic and became a monster, and then he was forced to fight again when he discovered that Meredith had been driven insane by a Red Lyrium forged sword. With the death of the two figure heads, peace was finally restored to Kirkwall but Hawke was forced to flee with his remaining allies to avoid arrest by the Templars and the Chantry.
His name has become a rallying cry for rebel mages everywhere.
