"Well, probably since our first date, but I don't consider us making things more official until that holiday party, do you?" He shrugs, not as worried about it seemingly. Celebrating an anniversary would be nice but Steven isn't one to pressure his partner about it. "Maybe we can do something special in December - go out somewhere nice, put on that god-awful Christmas film that was playing when we had our first kiss..." He chuckles at the thought of making out to The Grinch again. Ridiculous, but a happy memory.
Time really does fly.
The words about his kindness hit close to home though and Steven appreciates them more than Hawke probably realizes. Steven had no choice but to be kind in his little sheltered bubble for so long, in a world that didn't give him the time of day, for a harsh beginning that kept Marc safe too. His smile softens but is as genuine as ever, and he holds Hawke a little tighter to him.
"I try my best," he says quietly. "Thank you, love."
"That day works for me." Hawke isn't picky about the when in the past. The now is what matters most to him. Still, a year is a long time especially in this place where people vanish. He should do something a little special to mark the occasion.
He nods. "I like that. We can go out somewhere. Maybe a place we haven't really explored together before?"
There's a whole new island being built by a turtle or something, isn't there? Hawke has been so busy restoring his farm he hasn't paid much attention.
He leans down and kisses the top of Steven's head. "You're always welcome, Steven."
"Hard to find since we've been here so long," he says with a soft chuckle, choosing not to linger on that particular detail, but- "We'll find something, I'm sure. Even if we don't, I enjoy your company regardless. We don't have to do anything too fancy. Even visiting the familiar places we like would be nice."
Once finished eating though, Steven puts his dish into the sink for now and then turns his attention back to Hawke, hugging him around the middle. "I think I'm ready for that nap now, what about you?"
"Any place with you is an adventure." Steven's right. Where they go doesn't really matter. They'll have a great time together. Hawke's just... worried. He's not always good at the romantic stuff.
He shoves the rest of his sandwich in his mouth and then puts the plate in the sink next to Steven's. "I'll shower while you fix up the bed?"
Hawke putters for a moment to put away what few sandwich things remain out of the cold box and some things back in the pantry. He sneaks a kiss as he passes Steven on his way to get a shower.
It is going to feel good even though he sort of enjoys smelling of sex and Steven.
This all feels so very... domestic and easy, simple in a way it should always feel, and Steven suddenly feels all up in his emotions about it as he watches Hawke disappear from the kitchen. He never really thought he'd have this kind of romance in his life, a relationship he can call his own, someone who cares about him and sees him for him.
It's a lot to be thinking about standing alone in the kitchen, so he shakes himself out of it and returns to the bedroom to at least swap out the top sheet they made a mess of. He drops it and his towel at the laundry machines and dives onto clean sheets instead while he waits for Hawke, curled up on Hawke's side of the bed with his face in his boyfriend's pillow.
The shower feels amazing. While Hawke has enjoyed smelling like sex and Steven the hot water washing away the slight grime on him is really, really nice. And having simple normal soap and shampoo! No beer smell after! Oh, it's good to be home.
In deference to the clear sheets Hawke actually takes the time to dry himself off. He does so right next to the bed, though so Steven can watch. And that he can also jump right into bed as soon as he dry enough.
Hawke smiles fondly down at Steven as he rubs at his hair. "Stealing my side of the bed? Where am I supposed to sleep?"
But he looks so soft and cute Hawke wouldn't dare make him move.
He's still hugging the pillow when Hawke joins him in the room, though Steven turns enough to smile tiredly at him while his boyfriend towels off his hair.
"You'll just have to be creative, I suppose. Or steal it back from me," he teases with a little waggle of an eyebrow, chuckling under his breath. "I'm sure I'd be very easily manhandled at the moment."
He's tired, but happily so, and ready to cuddle away the exhaustion until they find the energy to start all over again.
"You're the cutest fucking thing I've ever laid eyes on." Hawke chuckles under his breath. He tosses the towel to some random corner of the room before he stretches.
Hawke's answer to this problem is utterly simple in the way Hawke is a simple man. He lifts the blankets, climbs on top of Steven and flops on him like a very warm, heavy mage blanket.
Not too hard, mind you. He doesn't want to crush his boyfriend but it's funny to him to just take his spot back by sleeping on Steven. Brilliant plan really.
"Oof!" He lets out an exaggerated breath when Hawke chooses the path of silliness, his weight pressing Steven further into the mattress, though it also incites laughter out of him. He manages to bend one arm back and pat Hawke's head, the only thing he can easily reach from here. "You're definitely warmer than the blankets, I'll give you that much."
Another chuckle and he turns his head to one side as fingers play with Hawke's damp hair, his hips playfully pressing upward. "If I suffocate in my sleep, it was lovely getting to know you this past year."
Hawke laughs with him and lingers just a few minutes longer before he slides off to the side and manhandles Steven into his arms. It's definitely more comfortable this way. Steven's weight won't ever crush him.
"It's been an amazing year getting to know you." Hawke sighs happily as he lefts his eyes drift closed. "I'll take another one just like it."
Trials and sufferings and all. Hawke wants that again and again with Steven. A thought that should make him panic a little bit after what happened last time but it doesn't. It just feels really nice to think that way.
He rolls into Hawke easily, happy with them on more equal ground and arms wrapped around each other. Steven snuggles back into him and relaxes, finding one of Hawke's hands to slip his fingers in between as they get comfortable.
"Me too," he says softly, even though he knows this probably can't last forever in this place. He's actively choosing not to go down that path of thinking, not right now anyway, reveling in this joy instead.
He brings Hawke's hand up to kiss briefly before closing his eyes. "Time to rest, love."
