[Steven is nervous. He's been nervous for days, ever since Hawke asked him out over text, and he's not sure why this feels like such a big deal to him but it does. It's probably just his anxiety talking, and the fact that he hasn't been on a legitimate date since... well, ever. While Layla gave him some great advice about keeping things casual and staying relaxed, Steven can't help but overthink. It's kind of his specialty, see.
He heads to Hawke's house Friday afternoon looking slightly more put together than usual, once again thanks to Layla's help. She insisted on making his hair look more groomed anyway and chose a crisp, light shirt that doesn't look like it came out of a bargain bin. He looks like himself just with slightly more effort added. After all, he wants to make more of an impression than just mates going out for a drink when this isn't just that. It's a date. A romantic date. He and Hawke made sure to make that crystal clear. Despite all this, he's trying to keep in mind that this should just be like friends hanging out regardless because that's the best kind of date, he imagines, and Hawke is already a very good friend so-... so this is fine! This is going to be great!
He knocks on Hawke's door with the same little beat of his knuckles he uses every time. Hawke keeps his door unlocked but Steven's never been the type to just come barging in, so he waits outside, bouncing a little on his feet with nerves, his eyes a dark greenish color thanks to his Legend powers giving away just how high his anxiety is.]
Ever since Anders he has kept the mere idea of having feelings for someone again at bay. There were bigger problems for him to deal with. In Folkmore, he didn't have those problems. There's only his little farm and people and the Trials. And there's Steven.
Sweet and kind and funny. Handsome and soft. Always bright and warm. Those feelings grew without Hawke's control or consent. They were there and Hawke did something about them. A date.
He opens the door at Steven's knock and tilts his head for a second. ]
You did something different to your hair. It looks nice. [ He's not lying but he does want to ruffle it and make it messy like it usually is.
Hawke's trimmed his beard and put on a nice tunic and light wash jeans. His tunic has little birds embroidered on it. He's put some effort into his appearance as well and his wings were a bit flickery with nerves. ]
[ On Christmas morning, Hawke will find a parcel wrapped in brown paper and tied up with a white string. There's a tag stating "From Steve - Merry Christmas" with a brief note on the back saying that it's customary for him to celebrate this holiday by giving gifts.
Inside contains a handsome hand-knit scarf in a dark oxblood color, with a waffle weave. ]
[ In an attempt to return Steve's holiday spirit Hawke delivers a shirt late on Christmas day. He has made an attempt to wrap it but the whole thing mostly looks mauled. ]
[Hawke will wake up to a package on the end of his bed that is just brown paper and twine to tie it shut. There is a note in very careful, shaky handwriting that says "happy solstace. put on robe and spin. - Fenris"
Upon opening the package Hawke will find a shirt and under it a red housecoat that is in a similar style to the kind that Marian (and thus also Garret) wore back home. It's made of finer materials and the edges look stylistically fiery.
If Hawke put it on and spins, harmless fire billows out around the bottom edges of the robe like a fiery skirt, harmless ash and sparks filling the air around him.]
[ Tony leaves a little basket at Hawke's door, filled with a couple bottles of very nice whiskey. Theres's a note around the neck of one of the bottles: "Don't drink it all at once. ~TS" ]
[ Days later because Hawke has been panicking on what to give Tony in return a book shows up outside the lab. It's not wrapped and has a hastily scribbled note on it. The book is Principles of Force Magic.
This is how I learned Force magic in Kirkwall. It's more technical than I really understand so it shouldn't be a problem for you. The whiskey tastes divine. G. Hawke ]
( a package arrives wrapped in butcher paper and addressed to hawke from one james barnes. it's rather lumpy on one side but the other seems to be hard.
upon opening the wrapping, he'll find a large, patterned quilt that easily fits two cozily underneath and a storable chess set, instructions included. folded inside the quilt is also a bottle of beard oil and a small beard comb. there's also a box of umbrella toothpicks for whatever reason. )
If you are getting him chocolates, make sure they are vegan. He will cheat and eat regular chocolate, but boy hasn't had all that much milk since and that's not fun. There are plenty of perfectly good chocolate that's vegan friendly.
Not that Bo-Katan doubted it but Steve was true to his word. He led Bo-Katan to Hawke’s house one day as promised. Though the guy couldn’t stuck around and just dropped her off. Which was fine. Though she would be lying if she said she wasn’t apprehensive about asking a total stranger about something she felt made her vulnerable.
Even so the Mandalorian walked up to the door and used her left hand to knock politely. Holding herself in as confident pose as she could manage. Waiting for this man she never met to answer.
The first thing is a dog barks about three times before a male voice shushes him and then Hawke himself opens the door. He's a big man, over six feet tall, with broad shoulders that look even broader with his wings of fire behind them. The dog, still a puppy, also pokes his head out to sniff at the newcomer.
"Hello," he says with a friendly smile. "Here for magic lessons?"
Anytime a new face shows up on Hawke's door and doesn't immediately let themselves in Hawke assumes they're there for magic lessons and are a brand new student. He's not growing anything just yet for people to come take so it can't be his garden.
[After a lot of time trying to figure this out, trying to decide if she should offer her help when she's mad at him, Layla finally contacts Hawke to offer some advice and help, because Steven loves the guy and if anyone gets what Hawke is going through, it's Layla.]
Look, I'm not exactly your biggest fan right now, but if you need to talk, pretty sure you won't find anyone else that understands better than me. Marc lied to me about it for years.
The days following the end of the most recent trial were full of plenty of clean up. The lands were left a mess with the chaotic weather and they still don't know what it all means, but the focus has been on getting back to some level of normalcy. Steven has missed his routine. He's been helping take care of recovery back in the Satori Hills apartment, but he's also been restless to go see how Hawke is doing at the farm. The last time he visited, it was still a mess there too, and while he did his best to help weed the plants and clean up the area for the animals, it's definitely work that will take longer than a day or two to finish.
There hasn't been time for much else. Not in between all the physical labor. After weeks without any privacy, yet still being in such close quarters together, it's been more than a little torturous to not be as physical as they were before. The clean up efforts have left them busy and distracted too, but now... there's been a bit more room to breathe.
Steven shows up at Hawke's door as promised late in the evening, already planning to stay the evening and then some. He wasn't really ever such a physical person before building up this relationship but his bond with Hawke has grown incredibly strong over the past year, and that's helped fuel his desires too. Look... he's in a loving relationship with a partner he's very attracted to, it's only normal to want to be with him after over a month without.
Despite knowing the door's unlocked, he knocks on it to announce himself before stepping inside, already taking his shoes and coat off to hang up by the door.
"It's me!" called out, as if it would be anyone else at this late hour.
"It had better be you or this would be awkward," Hawke says as he walks into the room completely naked.
He wasn't kidding about answering the door naked to greet Steven. He has plans. So many dirty, sexy, fun plans. This Trial had tested people in so many ways but having no privacy when he had such a loving, wonderful partner to shower with attention.
Hawke walks past Steven at first to close the door and then lock it. He gives Steven a hungry look taking in the sight of his gorgeous, rumpled, incredibly sexy boyfriend. The way he licks his lips slowly, like he's savoring it, is a pretty good sign about how he's feeling.
"Maker's breath, Steven, I've been aching for you." He takes a moment to kiss him but then simply picks him up and tosses him over his shoulder. Normally, he would be more romantic, take time to seduce and warm Steven up but well... he's too impatient for that.
Hawke carries him straight to the bedroom and tosses him onto the bed. There's signs of repair in the room and everything still smells faintly of earth and plants from how overgrown it had gotten but he very quickly pounces on Steven and goes right back to kissing him.
